The rum was rummy

British sailors used to be given a highly potent rum for their ration. One reason:  it had to be flammable so that, if spilled on gunpowder, the weaponry would still fire.  

Heard this from a really smart man (no, he was not a Brit). And it’s true. Just looked it up. 

The rum ration got taken away in the modern age when better technology required sober sailors.
